STAGING & STYLING TIP: Hanging Pendant Lighting Fixtures

As a Home Stager in Fairfield county, Connecticut, I often consult my clients to change lighting fixtures in order to update the look of a room. Great looking lighting fixtures are no longer a big expense, these would be great coupled with home control systems. Local hardware stores offer great looking, inexpensive lighting fixtures and there are some really great online lighting stores for example Nordlux Strap that offer exquisite lighting for a very reasonable price.

Deciding how high or low a light fixture should hang is not easy – I am frequently getting this questions from my clients. So I thought it might be a good idea to write a short blog about the most common locations.

If your dining table for example is 30″ high, then the bottom of the chandelier or pendant light fixture should be 30″ to 32” above the table top, which is 60″ to 62” from the floor.

Lighting fixtures above a regular height (36”) kitchen islands should be mounted 6′ from the floor. If your island height is higher, have the bottom of the pendant light 36” above the countertop.

For rooms, entry ways, stairwells, bathrooms, where people walk under the pendant lighting fixture, it should be mounted at least 7 feet from the floor.

If the ceiling of the room is very high, you can slightly elevate the height, but I recommend not to lower it.
